They are built around a high-velocity feedback loop. In applied fields such as data analytics, long stretches of passive instruction are rarely enough. Learners need to see a process, try it themselves, receive feedback, and apply what they learned while the concept is still fresh.
That is why I structure many of my classes around the 4 Ds Framework:
🗣️ Discussion (10%)
Introduce the core concept or logic clearly and concisely, keeping cognitive load manageable.
💻 Demo (20%)
Live-code and model the solution so students can observe expert decision-making, troubleshooting, and problem-solving in real time.
🛠️ Do It Yourself (50%)
Students immediately apply the concept to a parallel challenge designed within their Zone of Proximal Development.
🔍 Debrief (20%)
Work through a closely related problem, address common mistakes, reinforce transferable patterns, and consolidate learning.
Rooted in Cognitive Apprenticeship and Vygotsky’s concept of scaffolding, this structure shifts class time away from passive listening and toward active execution.
The goal is not simply to cover more material. It is to help students build confidence, recognize patterns, develop practical skills, and retain what they have learned.
Less watching. More building. Faster feedback. Deeper learning.
