Lately I have been struck by a trio of articles that perfectly capture the extremes of today’s AI conversation.

1. A ZDNet piece on 60+ hours of pair programming with ChatGPT/Codex unpacked the “little secrets” of making AI a productive coding partner. It explained why context matters, why incremental builds beat giant prompts, and how stable scaffolding can be more effective than flashy outputs.

2. Another ZDNet article described a founder completing four years of product development in four days for 200 dollars. The productivity leap is jaw dropping. It also makes me wonder what corners are being cut, what assumptions are baked in, and what fragility lurks under that speed.

3. An MSN story quoted Eric Schmidt warning that artificial superintelligence may soon outsmart humanity and that we are not ready. This is not science fiction. It is a grave concern from a tech leader.

Together, these pieces paint a picture of the crossroads we are at. On one side is breathtaking productivity and creativity. On the other side is over dependence and existential risk.

My work in AI Augmented Exploratory Learning (AAEL) is about using AI as a coach and co-creator while training people to think critically about its limits, ethics, and unintended consequences. The faster the technology, the greater the need for guardrails and for mass literacy in AI’s strengths and blind spots.
