This weekend, while teaching a session on AI in Healthcare, something became very clear to me.

We are rapidly approaching a future where AI will not simply assist healthcare systems. In many cases, it may become necessary for them to function at all.

Why?

Because demand is outpacing human capacity.

Healthcare systems around the world are already dealing with:
• staffing shortages
• physician burnout
• rising patient populations
• limited rural access
• and increasing diagnostic complexity

During the presentation, we discussed how AI is already being used to:

• evaluate medical imaging like MRIs and X-rays
• analyze bloodwork and patient records
• identify high-risk patients
• recommend treatment paths
• and assist in early diagnosis decisions

On paper, this sounds incredibly promising.
And in many ways, it is.
AI may help healthcare systems scale in ways humans alone cannot.

But here is the uncomfortable reality:

Predictions are not truth.
Recommendations are not knowledge.

AI systems are ultimately probabilistic models making interpretations from historical data, patterns, correlations, and training assumptions.

That distinction matters enormously when the output affects:
• cancer screenings
• cardiac risk
• medication recommendations
• surgical decisions
• or mental health evaluations

One of the biggest dangers with AI is not necessarily the technology itself.
It is human overconfidence in the technology.

Many people already treat GPS systems, recommendation engines, and even weather forecasts as objective truth. Yet forecasts are estimates built on incomplete information and shifting conditions.

Healthcare AI is no different.

A model may be highly accurate statistically and still fail individual patients.
A blood test model may miss edge cases.
An imaging model may underperform across demographic groups.
A recommendation engine may inherit biases from historical healthcare systems.

And yet, despite those risks, healthcare may have little choice but to move toward AI augmentation because the alternative may simply be insufficient human capacity.

That creates one of the defining challenges of the next decade:

How do we responsibly integrate AI into high-stakes human systems without surrendering human judgment?

Perhaps the future of healthcare is not AI replacing doctors.
Perhaps it is doctors, nurses, analysts, and healthcare administrators learning how to critically collaborate with AI while understanding both its strengths and limitations.

That may ultimately become one of the most important forms of literacy in modern society.
